More than 50 health and social care professionals from the statutory and voluntary sectors attended the third ‘Think Family’ workshop which was held on the 12th August in Downpatrick.
Dr Adrian Falkov, author of The Family Model Handbook facilitated the event sharing his expertise on roles and skills required to engage with family members. The workshop proved to be a key opportunity to update attendees of the on-going Think Family Pilot within the South Eastern Trust.

All individuals who experience mental illness are, or have at some point been, part of a family. The family plays a central role in each individual’s experience of symptoms, and ill health in turn has a critical and enduring influence on family life.

The conference is an opportunity to enhance capacity building, stimulate our thinking and practice to reflect ‘Think Family’ and realise that ‘Think Family’ is everyone’s responsibility.

Think Family Awareness Sessions

The Regional Think Family Sub Group are facilitating five awareness sessions in each Health and Social Care Trust to launch two leaflets on parental mental health. The purpose of these leaflets is to improve communication and information sharing among Adult Mental Health and Family and Childcare staff within Health and Social Care Trusts and raise awareness of the Think Family Subgroup and Think Family Interface Groups in each Trust.

CYPSP brought together statutory, community and voluntary organisations on 20th December at a ‘Think Family’ workshop in Antrim to share experiences and learning on supporting children and young people who care for family members with a mental health issue.

Dr Adrian Falkov, author of The Family Model Handbook said: “Mental ill health in parents or carers constitutes a major public health challenge internationally, with a growing number of initiatives and efforts, including local initiatives such as the Think Family approach here in Northern Ireland”.
