Many Young people who identify as LGBT still face inequality, violence and discrimination across the Southern Board Area. Homophobia damages the health of all young people affected. Institutionalised homophobia also results in high rate of discrimination towards young people in not just schools but the wider community. Verbal abuse or at times violence results in feelings of isolation and low self- esteem. For high self- esteem and a strong self- belief that they are ‘normal’ young people need to feel that they belong within youth group, schools and the wider community.

Homophobia remains to exist within schools, clubs and wider community and is widely seen as acceptable within society. Intolerance around the subject inhibits open discussion on issues facing young people and heterosexuality is generally seen as the ‘norm’ and anything else is not.  At the core of the Prism group will be the desire for inclusion, equality and the sense of working together to challenge homophobia and working on a meaningful cause.

In order to spear head the development of LGBT work there will be on-going consultation with young people in partnership with other agencies working on Challenging Homophobia   .
