Supporting Families: Downpatrick Back to School Initiative

To support parents, the CYPSP Down Locality Planning Group are taking collective action over the summer months to coordinate a Downpatrick Back to School Initiative to support families in Downpatrick to get ready for school and make this time of year a little less stressful for families.

Four primary schools and four post primary schools have got involved in the initiative alongside a range of locality group members including Lisburn YMCA, County Down Rural Community Network, Bryson Group, Downpatrick Sure Start, South Eastern HSC Trust and the Health and Social Care Board.

As part of the initiative we are asking parents who have school uniforms, PE kits, school bags, rain coats etc. that they no longer need to donate them at one of our identified drop off sites in Downpatrick.

Partner agencies will host two back to school fairs over the summer to support parents to get their children ready for returning to school in September;

27 July 2017 from 10.00am-12.30pm in Ballymote Community Centre

16 August 2017 from 1.00pm – 3.30pm in Downpatrick Leisure Centre

(Note: All school uniforms and associated items will be available at no cost to families attending the Back to School Fairs in Downpatrick)

Launch of the Regional Integrated Support for Education

A new regional integrated health and social care service working directly in mainstream primary schools supporting children has been launched this month.

‘RISE’ (Regional Integrated Support for Education) will enable staff from the health and social care and education sectors to work closely together to help children access learning and enhance their development to reach their full potential.

Speaking at the launch on 18 May 2017, Fionnuala McAndrew, Director of Social Care with the Health and Social Care Board explained:

“The RISE service was set up following a review of existing services across Northern Ireland and the need for a consistent approach across all schools. The service will identify and support children who may only need that initial help, or to identify children who even with that support, need to be supported further, within the Health and Social Care and Education systems.”

“Schools are now better prepared and equipped for children with delays in speech, coordination and motor skills difficulties with help and support from a range of healthcare professionals, she said.”

Out and About LGBT&Q Women’s Mentoring Programme

YouthAction Northern Ireland is delighted to extend its mentoring programme to young LGBTQ women aged 16 – 25 years across Northern Ireland.
The programme is premised upon the benefits that can arise from having an informal, supportive and purpose driven relationship with a youth worker. One-to-One sessions seek to support young women in identifying some of the personal barriers they are facing, to adopt action orientated approaches to these, while developing further support networks.
