Heroes Youth Awards – Young Carer of the Year Award 2016

The Health and Social Care Board have been commissioning a Young Carers Service across Northern Ireland since 2013.  On 20 May 2016 the Daily Mirror hosted the Heroes Youth Awards at the MAC Theatre, Belfast.  Latasha Moore aged 14 from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area was honoured with the Young Carer of the Year Award. Latasha has been supporting her family that includes the care of her mother, three siblings and interpreter support for her father whom is profoundly deaf.

The judge of the awards stated “Latasha stood out because she has so many responsibilities in the home.  Latasha has a mature head on young shoulders – she is a real inspiration”.

Well done to Latasha from all at CYPSP!

Children’s Voices, Children’s Places Event – 20 June 2016

This event will launch:

  • A new Key Stage 2 teaching resource Healthy Places, Healthy Children which focuses on children and place
  • A Child Friendly Places Action Plan for Belfast

Keynote Speaker:
Lamine Mahdjoubi, Professor of the Built Environment,
University of the West of England, Bristol

Presentations by primary school children
Eleven primary schools from across Belfast, who participated in piloting the new teaching resource will present concrete child friendly proposals for their local areas.

Visiting children from a primary school in Ilioupolis, Athens will also present their experiences of piloting the resource and share details about living in their local area.

Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People
Koulla Yiasouma, Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People will present a Commissioner’s perspective in relation to children, place and planning.

Save the Date: Toxic Childhood Conference – 20 October 2016

Toxic Childhood Conference has arose from the worrying emerging needs that have been discussed as a common theme across five of the Southern Area Locality planning meetings over the last year;  how children and parents are addicted to modern day technology/unhealthy food, the affects these have on both the child and the parent; parent child relationship, children’s behaviour, schooling, reaching their relevant milestones, dental treatment required and the modern day to day family life.  The following guest speakers have been confirmed to speak at the conference; Dr.Arthur Cassidy (Psychologist- Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Programme from Portadown),  Dr.Glenda Walsh (Stranmillis College- Principal Lecturer in Education of Early Years) and Bridin McKenna –(Psychotherapist- Life Therapist clinic).

Children and Young People with Cerebral Palsy in Northern Ireland (1981 – 2008)

The Northern Ireland Cerebral Palsy Register (NICPR) commenced its work in 1992 and it is one of the longest standing registers in Europe. The two aims of the NICPR are to establish a systematic approach to the surveillance of CP among children in NI. Secondly the Register supports research and audits into the condition, covering aetiology, treatment and assessment as well as health and social care services.

This report summarises the work of the NICPR. It presents findings of the cumulative work done by the Register since 1992, which involved collecting data, monitoring and surveillance activities as well as research conducted in collaborations national and internationally.  A copy of the Full Report is available via the link below:

Belfast Recovery College Prospectus 2016

Belfast Recovery College is a wellbeing and mental health recovery training provision which provides a range of courses for service users, families, friends, carers and all trust staff.  The focus is to provide the opportunity to learn together to help increase understanding of each other’s journey in promoting recovery.  All of the courses are co-produced and co-delivered by both a practitioner with professional experience and a peer trainer who has lived experience of a mental health condition.
ANYONE can enrol on a course and they are FREE so whether you are experiencing mental illness, are a carer or a staff member working in mental health or you have a special interest in mental health you may find a course that interests you.
