Never ever drink and drive

This is a message from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, in partnership with Southern Connections and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership. During the Coronavirus Pandemic and in the run up to Christmas, we would like to remind you that you should never ever drink and drive.

It is illegal to drink alcohol before getting behind the wheel, drivers may kill or injure not only themselves, but also their passengers and other road users.

Drivers who consume alcohol before getting behind the wheel may kill or injure not only themselves, but also their passengers and other road users.

Alcohol slows reactions and even very low amounts of alcohol will impair the skills needed for safe driving. It slows down the brain, impacting upon your judgement, reason, self-control and reaction times.

Northern Ireland reported 2,992 drink or drug driving offences from the 1st Sept 2019 – 31st August 2020, with an increase of 30.5% of drink and drug driving offences from November to December 2019.

Southern Area Family Support Hubs Steering Group

The Southern Area Hubs Steering Group met in January and have begun to measure the outcomes from services they procure through their Outcomes Group funding using the outcomes star.
To date this has shown good outcomes for families including improved well-being and improved parenting skills and relationships.
There continue to be strong connections between these 3 Hubs and the range of Parenting Programmes delivered across the Southern Area.

The Craigavon /Banbridge Hub recently conducted a study of users perspectives and perceptions of the Hub . One parent commented “I was willing to take any help… Because my son has been through a phase… It’s always nice to speak to someone other than family and not have to make an appointment to go and see the GP. It’s nice that somebody’s coming out to your house… in your own environment and getting any issues that you might have out in the open.” Another said “There’s a lot of good programmes there that can help you… That’s the best way to get information from a co-ordinated place; they have all the information from different projects available and can co-ordinate that for you.”

Southern Area Locality Planning: FYI Newsletter

Southern Area Locality Planning have recently introduced a new innovative way of sharing information on the great work of services and organisations striving to improve outcomes for children, young people and families in the Southern Trust area.  With the aim of strengthening contacts, participation, engagement and connections in the region, LPG members, as well as the wider community, are invited to submit flyers, posters & announcements promoting relevant events, opportunities, programmes and initiatives. All of this information is then collated and shared via a one-stop shop style newsletter – ‘FYI’ (For Your Information).

Moving into its 14th edition in August 2019, the fortnightly ‘FYI’ e-bulletin, circulated on alternate Thursday afternoons, now reaches approx. 700 contacts and regularly advertises at least 20 opportunities on behalf of a varied range of community, voluntary & statutory organisations. More recently, the newsletter has also been circulated to the C2k education network.

If you wish to make a submission, for sharing across the southern area LPG membership and wider community, or if you would like to receive future ‘FYI’ bulletins, please just get in touch, by e-mailing localityplanning@ci-ni.org.uk.
